How to Color Burlap with Alcohol Markers

Supplies:

  • 3 shades of brown alcohol marker

  • 1 brown acrylic marker

  • 1 white acrylic marker

Burlap Texture

Step 1:

Step 1 for the burlap texture adult coloring tutorial. Shows adding the first brown lines to the curtains.
  • Using your lightest shade, add medium-sized horizontal lines with a quick flicking motion.

  • Don’t worry about making them perfect — messy lines are perfect for burlap!

Step 2:

Step 2 for the burlap curtains alcohol marker tutorial. Shows adding more brown to the burlap curtains using an Ohuhu alcohol marker
  • Using your second lightest shade, repeat the same flicking motion, this time adding vertical lines (going the opposite direction).

Step 3:

Shows step 3 from the adult coloring tutorial. Shows adding more lines to the burlap texture.
  • Take your darkest shade and add more lines in the same direction as Step 1 (horizontal), placing them between the lighter lines.

  • Some overlap is fine—messiness helps create a realistic burlap look—you just don’t want to completely cover the first color

Step 4:

Shows step 4 of the burlap alcohol marker coloring tutorial. Shows adding more lines to the burlap texture to make the curtains look like burlap. Ocean in the background.
  • Continue layering lines, alternating directions and colors, until each color has been used in both directions (horizontal and vertical).

Step 5:

Shows last alcohol marker step of the adult coloring tutorial. Shows adding more brown to the burlap curtains using an Ohuhu alcohol marker to create the burlap texture.
  • If you notice empty areas, fill them in with your lightest shade using the same flicking motion.

  • If you have a lot of empty space, you can repeat the layering process once more for a fuller texture.

Fringe

Step 1:

Step 1 for adding fringe to the burlap curtains. Shows coloring over the lines of the curtains using a white acrylic marker.
  • Go over the curtain edge lines with your white acrylic marker.

  • It’s okay if the lines still show through slightly — this is just the first layer.

Step 2:

Step 2 for adding fringe to the curtains. Shows adding brown acrylic to the curtain edge over the white acrylic marker.
  • Using your brown acrylic marker, add small dots along the edge.

  • Let them overlap slightly to create a bumpy, uneven fringe. (You can use short lines instead if you prefer.)

Step 3:

Shows step 3 for adding fringe to the burlap curtains. Shows adding more white acrylic to the edge of the curtains.
  • Repeat with the white acrylic marker, adding more spread-out dots without fully covering the brown acrylic.

Step 4:

Last step in the adult coloring tutorial for coloring burlap. Shows adding brown acrylic marker to the curtain edge.
  • Add more brown dots, covering most of the white but leaving some visible.
