Happy Coloring!

Supplies:

  • 2 Shades of Brown Alcohol Marker

  • A White Colored Pencil

    - (We have tested the tutorial with several types of colored pencils, and found that this technique works better with more opaque colored pencils. The best colored pencil we found was Crayola's white watercolor colored pencil, but feel free to use whatever colored pencils you prefer!)

Step 1: Wood Grain

Step 1 in the coloring tutorial for how to color a clear umbrella. Shows some of the umbrella colored in.
  • Using one of your brown alcohol markers, draw in the wood grain.

  • Try adding a few ovals for knots and lines that move around the knots as they go down the wood.

  • Let Dry 30-60 seconds.

  • Pro Tip: It doesn't have to look perfect! The next steps will make a big difference so don't worry if you don't love the design at first!

Step 2: Continue Wood Texture

Step 2 for the how to color a clear umbrella coloring tutorial. Shows the umbrella completely colored in, ready for accents.
  • Using your other brown alcohol marker, go around the wood grain you drew in step one.

  • It's okay if the colors overlap a bit. This just adds more lines and adds to the wood texture!

Step 3: Finish the Wood

Step 3 for the clear umbrella tutorial. Shows the finished umbrella with accents.
  • Repeat step 2 until all the wood is colored, switching between your two alcohol markers and letting each color dry before adding the next one.

Step 3: Add the Whitewash

Step 3 for the clear umbrella tutorial. Shows the finished umbrella with accents.
  • Using your white colored pencil, color over the wood - enough that it looks whitewashed, but you can still see the wood grain through the pencil.

  • Pro Tip: I like to color over the wood in the direction of the wood boards, as that is the direction most wood is whitewashed.

Step 4: Try it on an Actual Coloring Page!

You can follow the same steps on any page you like and make it your own! Try new colors, add extra details, and color your whitewashed wood in a way that's uniquely yours!
