How to Color Bricks

Feel free to use markers or colored pencils for this technique—markers give a smoother look while colored pencils provide a more textured look. Up to you on what look you are going for! Either way, following the simple steps below will make your bricks look realistic and full of dimension

First step for coloring bricks tutorial. Shows all the bricks colored in with a base coat.

Step 1: Apply a Base Coat

Choose 3-4 different colors in your prefered medium and fill in each of the bricks with a solid base layer. This is the easy part!

  • If using markers, let dry 30-60 seconds

Step two in the coloring bricks tutorial. Shows dots added to the bricks for texture

Step 2: Add Some Texture

Grab a slightly darker shade of each color and make random dots over your base. Mix up the sizes and placement to give your bricks a natural, weathered look. Don't worry about getting it just right, bricks are naturally imperfect!

  • If using markers, let dry for 30-60 seconds

Step three for the coloring bricks how-to. Shows added shading for the bricks

Step 3: Add a Little Depth

Use colors that are just a bit darker than your dots and shade areas where shadows would naturally fall. This is what makes your bricks pop and feel three-dimensional.

  • If using markers, let dry 30-60 seconds

Shows an optional step 4 for the coloring bricks guide. Coloring over the black lines.

Step 4: (Optional Add!)

Finally, for an optional finishing touch, grab a white acrylic pen and gently trace over the black lines between bricks. This adds a subtle highlight to the page and gives your work a polished, dimensional effect.
