Step 1: Horizon

  • Use a pencil to draw in the horizon where the ocean meets the sky

  • Then erase the pencil line so you can barely see it

Step 2: Ocean Gradient

Step 2 for the coloring tutorial. Shows coloring in the ocean.
  • Use a colorless blender and color in the entire ocean.

  • Then add thin, wavy strokes of 4 shades of blue for the ocean, starting with your lightest shade and working upwards to the darker shades, creating an ocean gradient.

  • Then work back down the ocean going from dark to light, to blend the colors and fill in any remaining areas.

  • Try to keep the ocean wet the entire time for this step.

Step 3: Sky Gradient

Step 3 in the coloring tutorial. Shows coloring a blue gradient sky above the ocean.
  • Start with your lightest color and color about 1/3 of your sky.

  • Before it dries, use your second lightest color and overlap it with the first color slightly and above the first color.

  • Blend the colors with the first color using circular motions.

  • Repeat this step until you have used all four shades of blue and colored the whole sky.

Step 4: White Accents

Step 4 for the coloring tutorial. Shows the finished sky to ocean ombre.
  • Using a gel pen, color the horizon.

  • Next, add small waves and sparkles to the ocean.

  • Then add some clouds to the sky.
